The Case of the Sun Bather's Diary (G K Hall Large Print Paperback Series)
Published in Paperback by G K Hall & Co (February, 2001)
Author: Erle Stanley Gardner
Average review score:

Hamilton Burger Had the Upper Hand....
or so he thought. Burger's legal aruguement was sound, but then he got the shock of his life, when Mason turned it against him. With Burger pleading to get a look at documents Mason produced, he put Mason on the stand against his own client. However, Mason was both clever enough to avoid a criminal charge... and use his own testimony to get his client aquitted...

Thrilling!
Typical Perry Mason mystery with the eccentric opening, the thrilling development and the pleasant victory. Mason is severely cornered; the circumstantial evidence shows that the murderer is either Mason himself or his client, the sunbathing girl. D.A. Hamilton Burger cannot restrain himself from laughing triumphantly. Although I know it is Mason who laughs last, I enjoy the thrillingness very much.

Color from the Heart: Seven Great Ways to Make Quilts With Colors You Love
Published in Paperback by C & T Pub (September, 1999)
Authors: Gai Perry, Lynn Koolish, and Liz Aneloski
Average review score:

An inspiring workbook for any quilter!
I love this book! It's an important one for beginner quilters, and also for quilters who need confidence in putting colors and textures together in a quilt. Do you have a sizeable stash, buy the fabric medleys you see in magazines but freeze up when it's time to use them? Can't walk out of a fabric store without a sack of fabric in your hand, yet it turns into one more project on your to-do list because, mmmm, maybe those fabrics you bought don't go well together after all?

I have another book that deals with color theory, fabric texture, pattern and theme. I'm supposed to cut little pieces from my precious stash and paste them in the appropriate boxes in the book. I just couldn't do it! I like Color From the Heart because the author sets up seven lessons during which you actually make a little quilt in each lesson. Lesson One focuses on Spontaneity. You'll be asked to make a little postage stamp quilt. This was a fun exercise, and yielded some interesting surprises for me. Lesson Two turns to Color Enrichment, and so on. In each lesson there are colorful photos of quilts made that reflect the quilter's individual choices.

The author spends just a few pages giving you background on color theory. That's fine with me. You can get more on that elsewhere. Her purpose in the book, as I see it, is on teaching you how to expand your knowledge of fabric color, design, texture etc. and how the fabrics interact and influence one another. All this so you learn to trust your color instincts.

Color from the Heart
Gai Perry deserves two "thumbs up" for this highly creative, informational guide to choosing colors for quiltmaking!

Her approach to sharing her knowledge about a complex issue- color- is fantastic because she gives us precise definitions of different types of colors and their characteristics without TELLING US what to do with them or squashing our individual creative impulses with EXCESSIVE RULES -- In other words, she gives us many creative tools, but lets us build what whatever we want with them!

Another BIG PLUS about Color from the Heart is that it displays beautiful color itself...many books on the topic of quilts, color and other crafts have dull, out-of-focus photos or monotone line illustrations, but NOT THIS BOOK! Gai has generously packed her book with fresh and brilliant colors (don't miss the excellent section entitled: Quilt Gallery), even in the diagrams, which give specific and clear descriptions on how to build each quilt block, right down to numbering each step and pairing it with a sharp, detailed illustrated guide. You just CAN"T GO WRONG with these instructions!

Finally, the book is written in an interesting and conversational style...no confusing chatter, predictable color 'wheels' or boring stories here. This is a book WELL WORTH the price: it truly belongs in every serious quiltmaker's library.

Thanks, Gai! When is your next book coming out!

Crabtree & Evelyn Fragrant Herbal: Enhancing Your Life with Aromatic Herbs and Essential Oils
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (May, 1998)
Authors: Lesley Bremness, Marie-Pierre Moine, Clay Perry, and Jean Cazal
Average review score:

SHEER BEAUTY
This is an absolutely gorgeous book, loaded with pictures that make me want to quit my job and get a greenhouse in the country and grow beautiful herbs and flowers. This book covers a wide range of topics for each aromatic group, ranging from perfumes, to garden designs, to recipes. It is practical as well as it is beautiful. This is one of my favorite garden/herb picture books, in fact it is one of my favorite picture books, period.

Comprehensive & powerful,evoking emotion,memory,inspiration.
The English perfumier Crabtree & Evelyn "nose" (knows) about the power of scent. Our reactions to a scent-experience can be powerful; This became apparent one day while sticking my nose into a fully-blown pink cabbage rose. The neurons that sense smell cut straight to the brain, immediately evoking thoughts and feelings related to past experiences. The scent of grandma's lilac soap may stir joy-filled memories experienced during a visit fifteen years ago. Crabtree & Evelyn's Fragrant Herbal is as enjoyable and informative as it is practical. There are recipes for making fragrant soaps and scented products containing essential oils and scented herbs grown in one's own garden. For those who are new to the growing of herbs for personal use, there is an A-Z section on growing and use of herbs. The photographs are of a high quality and display everything from beautifully crafted soaps and bath products to scenes of scented gardens abundant with roses and lavender. The artistic and writing style of this work is quite English, captivating those qualities of Britain found endearing by romantically-minded Americans. A well-done compilation that appeals as much to the heart of a gardener as to the mind seeking everyday uses for the season's bounty, Crabtree & Evelyn's Fragrant Herbal is a learning opportunity for both the seasoned gardener and the amateur maker of scented home and bath items. This comprehensive, powerful work is a tool for improving the quality of life through the use of scent, whether it be in the garden, bath or home.

Ecce Romani I: A Latin Reading Program: Meeting the Family, Rome at Last
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (K-12) (November, 2000)
Authors: Gilbert Lawall, Perry, and Palma
Average review score:

Making a dead language come back to life...
Although I have studied (to some extent) quite a few foreign languages, I have never come across a textbook quite as beautiful and captivating as this one! Using the immersion method, the student is plunged into a study of Roman language and culture, instead of a detached, intellectual method that most textbook authors are accustomed to using. The language is taught in a series of interesting (and often amusing!) stories that tell the evolving tale of the Cornelii, an upper-class Roman family. And each chapter is illustrated with a lovely drawing by an artist that clearly put much time into it. By teaching culture, society, and mythology at the same time as the language, this book succeeds in bringing ancient Rome to life and interesting many an apathetic high-schooler. As for myself, although my school doesn't offer Latin III, I will gladly dole out the $$ for the third in this series to continue the study myself. If you're a first-time Latin teacher looking for a well-rounded text, then LOOK NO FURTHER!

Latin Level 1
Latin Level 1 is a great book for begining Latin students. I have used this book for a year and I feel that i know what i should know about Latin 1. The book also tells you alot about Roman culture. It is not boring like I thought Latin would be. It has a pretty good story line.

Electronic Failure Analysis Handbook
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (28 February, 1999)
Author: Perry L. Martin
Average review score:

The "Bible" in Failure Analysis
After I read this book, I passed it to my Engineers, and afterwhich I never have a chance to access it anymore, as both my Engineers just won't let go!

This is indeed "THE BIBLE" for Failure Analysis. It covers most of the techniques needed for each type of FA, like X-ray imaging, SAM, Thermal imaging, Metallography, Chemical Characterization, SEM/EDX, and Electronic Failures. The best of it all is that in Part 2, it is organized in terms of equipment techniques; in part 3, it is organized in terms of products, like PCB, PCBA, connection, component, etc. As such it give you the flexibility either go to Part 2 and learn about how and what types of failure analysis a particular equipment can perform, or go to Part 3 and find out the sequence of which equipments is to used first for a particular failure mode.

However, I need to highlight that the though there are tons of photos in the book, the quality of the photos need lots of improvement. Many a times, it takes me long time to figure out what's in the photos. Maybe some highlights or markings at the particular spot of interest in the comparison of the photos would help some novice readers to appreciate better

GOOD STUFF!
The best thing I can say about this book is that I use it every day. Well organized and easy to use. Well done

Faure is a musical master
Gabriel Faure is perhaps one of the most astute musical composers, especially for vocalists. He creates complex, pleasing pieces, that are a challenge to sing. These peiece are for serious performers who like to achieve the satisfaction of doing hard work. Not that all of his pieces are an extreeme challenge, they are beautiful very artistic pieces. The performer can put a lot of drama into each song. I highly recommend anything by Faure.

God-Man: The Word Made Flesh - 1920
Published in Paperback by Kessinger Publishing Company (March, 1997)
Authors: George W. Carey and Inez Eudora Perry
Average review score:

An amazing book...
At first, I couldn't really make any sense of this book and it sat on my shelf for months... but once I began to discuss it with a like-minded friend, it opened up new worlds to me. Whether or not the alchemical process it describes is the "literal truth," it does provide an alternative reading of the New Testament, and a potential key to other world mythology.

The book attempts to provide physiological reasons for aetheticism. The alchemical process is described as a purely physical process that creates the "God-Man," the "next step in human evolution." It links together many facets of esotericism and occultism from kundalini to cell salts, using a symbolic reading of the New Testament.

Read it along with "The Secret of the Golden Flower," a classic of Taoist internal alchemy while keeping in mind Luke 8:11 - "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God."

God Man: The Word Made Flesh.
I have been studying and reading this book for many years. At first there was so much new information about what was mythical and mystical and historical that I had to re-educate myself. The authors present a view of Jesus Christ and Christianity that was totally new to me. If the Holy Bible is really a Holistic book then "God Man:The Word Made Flesh" explains what the Mystery of Christ truly entails. Astrology, Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy are the sciences that the ancients were writing of in all the ages that are represented in the biblical stories, allegories and parables. They were ultimately concerned with the human body and how it worked and preserving and passing this knowledge on. Dr. George W.Carey and Inez E.Perry make a connection between perfect health and the Biochemical tissue or cell salts. The Seed is the Word.(See Luke 8:11) There are three other books that should be read along with this one. They are "The Shadow of the Third Century:A Revaluation of Christianity", "Gerald Massey's Lectures",published by A&B Book Publishers and another publication by Inez E. Perry titled "The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation". From this book I have come to the revelation that the Alchemists were searching mistakenly for a process that changed base metals into gold. They were searching for a precious substance. That substance is explained to be what the Mystery of Christ is all about.
